Celebrating the Legacy of Tom "Cactus" Barnes: 35 Years of Dedication
After nearly 35 years of service, Tom "Cactus" Barnes is hanging up his tools and stepping into retirement, leaving behind an incredible legacy at AHW Watseka. Cactus' journey began in 1990 when he walked into the dealership, toolbox in hand, ready to work. With no prior agricultural experience but plenty of determination, he quickly proved that skill, hard work, and a willingness to learn could take him far.
Starting as a setup technician for Field Cultivators and 750 Drills, Cactus soon became a trusted mechanic. Over the years, he transitioned to working on turf equipment, becoming the go-to expert for countless customers. His adaptability and expertise helped him navigate decades of change, from Shoemaker to Hogan Walker and now AHW. Through it all, his greatest joy came from the relationships he built—with coworkers and customers alike. Many of those customers became like family, and Cactus made sure to send them Christmas cards every year, a testament to his genuine care and appreciation for the people he served.
One of his most valuable pieces of advice for new technicians? "Stay off the tool truck." Cactus firmly believes that great work isn’t about having the most expensive tools—it’s about skill, dedication, and a strong work ethic. He still relies on the same Craftsman tool set he received as a kid, proving that quality work comes from the technician, not the price tag of the tools.
Beyond his mechanical expertise, Cactus has always had a passion for music. As a bass player in the Poppin’ Johnny Band, he performed alongside coworkers, bringing energy and entertainment to local events. His love for music, much like his dedication to his work, has been a defining part of his life.
As he moves into retirement, Cactus is looking forward to restoring his 1955 Pontiac—a car he first owned 45 years ago, sold, and later bought back. More importantly, he’s excited to spend time with his wife and son, embracing the next chapter of life at a well-earned, relaxed pace.
Cactus, your hard work, humor, and unwavering dedication will be deeply missed at AHW Watseka, but your impact will always remain. Thank you for an incredible 35 years. Enjoy your retirement—you’ve earned it!
